In 2023, three hundred years will have passed since the death of Jan Blažej Santini Aichel, an important Czech architect of Italian origin, famous for his unique style termed Baroque Gothic.

On the occasion of this anniversary, JEDL has prepared the SANTINI project.

It was launched in 2021 with a premiere in Santini's first building, the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist in Sedlec, near Kutná Hora. At the tender age of twenty-five, he was entrusted with the reconstruction of what at the time was the largest church in the Bohemian lands. The monumental, originally Gothic monastery church of the Assumption of Our Lady had been in ruins for more than two centuries after it had been pillaged by Hussite armies. Our intent, through a theatrical intervention inside the church, is to explore Santini's important projects in Bohemia and Moravia. In the coming years, the performance will thus take place in many other buildings by Santini.

Santini's buildings as a dematerialized web of lines penetrated by light. Buildings articulating the manifest nature of the world. This symbolic nature of Santini's architecture corresponds internally with the artistic tendencies of the work of the JEDL group.

JEDL's artists have long been striving in their plays to touch upon the spiritual aspect of the world, man, and interpersonal relations. The SANTINI project thus continues these efforts in an organic manner.
