ZAHRADNÍČEK

All that’s mine is yours

Nine years of long-distance marriage, nine years of correspondence fatherhood, nine years of love via paper. And between the lines, all that existential hustle and bustle, pain, and reconciliation.

Jan and Marie Zahradníček were married for 15 years, and Jan spent 9 of those years in a Communist prison camp. After his arrest in 1951, Marie and their three children were evicted from their apartment, and ended up on a state-owned farm without water, electricity, or heat. During his imprisonment, their two daughters died of mushroom poisoning. He was released for the funeral and told he didn't have to return, but then was taken back to jail anyway. Nevertheless, Marie managed to get pregnant for a fourth time. Jan didn't see his fourth child until it was three years old. He died four months later.

The play came about on the occasion of the 115th anniversary of the poet's birth.
